Congratulations Shresthkumar Karnani, Oracle AnDackaThon 1st Place!

From April 16-18 more than thirty students from SJSU, Cal Poly, and Illinois Institute of Technology participated in an Analytics and Data Oracle User Community (ANDOUC) Hackathon (AnDackaThon ) co-hosted at Oracle Headquarters and SJSU. Participants teams competed in two tracks a data track and an applications track that made use of Oracle 26AI technologies and real work ocean and smart city data. Shresthkumar Karnani, an SJSU CS student pictured with his team mates, was on a team which finished
first place at this event.

Last Friday, April 17, the SJSU CS Department, in partnership with the IEEE Electronics Packaging Society (EPS) and the SJSU Career Center, hosted the inaugural IEEE EPS SJSU Career Panel at the Elevate Career Hub at San Jose State University.

Congratulations to our student, Harun Saib, for presenting his work on AI in surveillance at the opening of the AI Center for Civic and Social Good. Representing the College of Science alongside projects from the School of Information, Applied Data Science, and the University Library, he showcased impactful research at a meaningful community event. His presentation sparked thoughtful discussion and drew strong engagement from attendees.

We are proud to congratulate our student and their team on winning 1st Place in the San Francisco State University Lam Family College of Business Entrepreneurship Track and Best Hack for the Future of Work from JFFVentures at SF Hacks. Their project, Bottlr.tech, was developed under the theme “Tech for a Greener Tomorrow” and connects individuals who want to donate recyclables with local collectors who rely on bottle redemption for income. The platform features scheduled pickups, live-map coordination, and AI-powered bottle count verification to promote transparency and fairness. By leveraging existing recycling infrastructure, the team addressed the issue of over $100 million in unredeemed CRV deposits in California while supporting economic equity for collectors. Completing this impactful project in under 48 hours is an impressive achievement, and we commend them for demonstrating how thoughtful, human-centered technology can drive meaningful environmental and social change.

 

Our Fall 2025 AI/ML Workshop was a wonderful success, bringing together SJSU undergraduate students for a hands-on, three-hour exploration of core artificial intelligence and machine learning concepts. Participants engaged in interactive activities, trained simple models, and contributed valuable insights through surveys and interviews that will support ongoing research in improving computer science education. With full sessions, enthusiastic learners, and meaningful contributions to Dr. Tshukudu’s research, the event highlighted the growing interest and excitement around AI/ML within the SJSU community.

We’re thrilled to share that the CS Club Showcase was a great success!

With seven student clubs tabling at the event and an estimated 100–120 students in attendance, the turnout exceeded expectations. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to connect, explore involvement opportunities, and build community within the CS Department.

We are proud to celebrate the achievements of our exceptional Computer Science students. Grace Li and Sriman Ujhanthachhen have been awarded the CS Scholarship in recognition of their academic excellence and dedication to the field. Sanaa Stanezai has received the prestigious Broadcom Scholarship, reflecting her outstanding potential in technology and innovation. Finally, we congratulate Chase Barman on being named the Outstanding Graduating Senior, honoring his exemplary academic record and contributions to the department. We commend each of these students for their hard work and commitment to excellence

Congratulations to Dr. Nada Attar and Dr. Genya Ishigaki! They were mentioned in the SJSU AI article -- specifically in the Ethics and Responsible AI and Cybersecurity and Big Data topics of the "Research" section respectively. Dr. Attar's CIRCLE grant from Mozilla was highlighted under "Initiatives" and the CIRCLE student club in responsible computing was mentioned in "Students". The "Academics" also showcases multiple degrees from the CS Department.

Congratulations to CS Prof. Faranak Abri, working with Dr. Namin and Dr. Jones (both Texas Tech. University) awarded an NSF grant for a collaborative research project title: "SaTC: CORE: Small: Analytical Models for Conversational Social Engineering Attacks." , for 3-years (Oct/2023 - Sept./2026), in the amount of $200,000 (for each PI).

Prof. Fabio Di Troia, (with Prof. Younghee Park of CMPE), won an 3-years NSF grant on Undergraduate Research Experience for Women in Machine Learning-based Cybersecurity (over $370K award).

Congratulations to Prof. William Andreopoulos, winner of an NSF award, for 6-years (7/15/2023 - 6/30/2029), in the amount of $2,499,411, for S-STEM: Empowering Low-Income Students to Succeed in Engineering and Computer Science.
