Executive Director, UA&S
Joel earned his B.A. in Intensive Psychology from UC Santa Cruz and his M.S. in Counseling
from CSU Bakersfield.
Joel had a meaningful and positive experience during his own higher education journey,
which continues to shape his work today. He is passionate about creating equitable,
relatable, and fun experiences for students as they navigate college. His goal is
to help students feel supported, confident, and empowered as they explore their interests
and work toward their goals.
With a background in advising, student success, and career development, Joel is dedicated
to making the college experience more accessible and impactful for all students.
Assistant Director
Loralei is a Wisconsin native but has been living out in California for a little over
4 years and loves the San José area. She is a first generation college student and
has a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Communication and Religious studies from
the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire and a Master’s degree in Servant Leadership
from Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
She began her work at San José State University in July, 2022 as a Student Academic
Success Specialist first in the Humanities and the Arts Student Success Center and
then moved into a Sr. Student Academic Success Specialist in the College of Social
Sciences Student Success Center in August of 2023. She recently moved into her role
as an Assistant Director in March, 2026 and is excited about serving students in the
Lurie College of Education Student Success Center.
In her free time Loralei enjoys hiking, baking sourdough bread and baked goods, traveling
and trying new foods.

Student Academic Success Specialist
Laura is an SJSU alumna with a B.A. in Psychology. She brings a strong foundation
in public service, having previously served as a Youth Employment Specialist and,
most recently, as an Employment Program Representative. She has developed a career
centered on empowering individuals through personalized coaching, connecting students
and clients to vital resources, and engaging in meaningful community outreach. Her
passion for supporting others and her commitment to equity-focused service align strongly
with the mission of our college and the Student Success Center.
Outside of her professional work, Laura enjoys visiting record stores and traveling,
interests that reflect her curiosity and appreciation for diverse experiences.

Administrative Assistant
Tracy Bishop is a SJSU alumna with her B.S. in Graphic Design with a concentration
in Illustration. She spent her years after graduation pursuing a career in design
and as a children’s book illustrator.
Tracy is thrilled to be back at SJSU as an administrative assistant. She brings her
experience working in various industries to promote a warm and supportive environment
for students at the Student Success Center.
When she’s not working, Tracy enjoys knitting, reading, writing, and going on long
walks with her schnauzer mix.
