Students can join a men’s fraternity or women’s sorority at San José State University through formal or informal recruitment, coordinated by Student Involvement staff at the start of each fall and spring semester, depending on the organization’s governing council.

Panhellenic Council (PHC) sororities conduct formal recruitment in the Fall, with some chapters recruiting in the Spring.

National Pan-Hellenic (NPHC) fraternities and sororities recruit in both the Fall and Spring.

United Sorority and Fraternity Council (USFC) fraternities and sororities recruit in the Fall and Spring.

Interfraternity Council (IFC) fraternities recruit in both the Fall and Spring.

All recruitment periods are substance-free, meaning that no chapter, whether recruiting or not, may host or participate in any recruitment event where alcohol or other drugs are present or used.

Unrecognized Organizations

Being part of a fraternity or sorority can be one of the most rewarding experiences of college life. However, some unauthorized groups—not affiliated with San José State University—may attempt to recruit students by promising a similar experience.

SJSU strongly discourages students from attending events or affiliating with any group that the university does not officially recognize. These organizations do not follow university policies or receive the oversight and support provided to recognized chapters, which help ensure a safe and positive membership experience.

The following chapters have been expelled, suspended, or never recognized by San José State University or their national organizations due to serious violations such as hazing, violence, or inappropriate chapter management practices, or have had cease and desist orders issued within the past few years.
